How Brake Pads Work on Your Vehicle

The entire team at Lithia Subaru of Oregon City wanted to help bring awareness to the way the brakes function on your vehicle so you are in a better position to be able to identify when things are failing.

The thing to remember about the brake pads is that they are designed to wear away in an effort to not only stop the vehicle, but to protect the rotors and calipers from damage. The brake rotors are attached to each wheel in the disc system, and spin freely until they are slowed by the brake caliper.

In between the brake caliper and the brake rotor are the brake pads. These pads are nothing more than a buffer, and will squeeze the brake rotors so they slow each time the brake pedal is pressed. Once the pads wear down, metal will contact the metal of the rotors, resulting in a loud noise that is a clear indication they need changing.
